Heat treatment process for automobile synchronizer ring gear cold rolling alloy-steel strip 16MnCr5
The invention discloses a heat treatment process for an automobile synchronizer ring gear cold rolling
alloy-steel strip 16MnCr5. The cold rolling alloy-steel strip 16MnCr5 comprises, by mass, 0.14-0.19% of C,
no larger than 0.4% of Si, 1.00-1.30% of Mn, 0.80-1.10% of Cr, no larger than 0.035% of P and no larger than
0.035% of S. According to the heat treatment process, small-deformation rolling in 7-12 passes and 1-2 times
of heat treatment annealing process enable a steel strip structure to gradually change to obtain a metallographic
structure meeting fine blanking requirements, so that the ultimate object of replacing copper with steel is achieved;
and the steel strip not only has the softness of a copper ring gear in property, but also is higher than the copper
ring gear in intensity and abrasive resistance, the service life of an automobile ring gear is further prolonged,
cost is further lowered, and a large quantity of non-ferrous metals are spared for the country.
16MnCr5 Grade Cold Rolled Steel Strip supply according to EN 10132-2 annealed and skin passed in coils or
cut to length depends on customer demand.
16MnCr5 Grade Cold Rolled Steel Strip Usage Areas:
This grade mainly preferred for parts cold forming and case hardening process, especially automotive industry.

Description
Cold-rolled narrow strip made of the alloy steel 16MnCr5 will be delivered in thicknesses up to 10 mm for
case hardening in following conditions: – soft annealed or soft annealed and little rerolled (+A or +LC),
- cold rolled (+CR).

Usage
When either hot- or cold-rolled, casehardened steels are predominantly used for transmission parts
(plate springs, clutch disks). The hot-rolled steels offer good punching quality and formability. After
case-hardening, the finished components have a very strong core, whereas the surface is characterised by
good wear resistance.
As the melting and hot-rolling conditions have an effect on further treatment at the customer, the customer
should always state the intended use when placing an order
Condition of delivery, scope of testing and certificate
The provisions of EN 10084, chapters 6.4.1 and 7 shall apply for delivery and inspection. All case-hardened
steels are delivered in a hot-rolled and untreated condition.

Case-hardening steels
The C content for optimized machining and forming lies between 0.07% and 0.20%. In order to achieve the desired
properties, a high degree of hardness in the case and usually a tough core, the surface area must be enriched with
carbon, hardened and perhaps tempered or stress-relieved. Carbon enrichment is accomplished in the course of
component manufacturing by means of carburization. Carbonitriding is carried out when nitrogen enrichment is required.
EN 1.7131 Steel 16MnCr5 Material
EN 1.7131 steel (16MnCr5 material) is an European standard carburized steel (case hardening steel) with good
hardenability and machinability. For larger cross-section parts, high surface hardness and wear resistance can be
obtained after heat treatment, and low-temperature impact toughness is also high. For specification and datasheet,
please see the tables below.
16MnCr5 steel is generally used after carburizing and quenching, and is mainly used for manufacturing gears, worms,
sealing bushings and other components.

Case hardening steels are mostly used in the area of engineering for parts subject to higher stress and higher core
strength, e.g. for measuring tools, joints and gears. Case hardening steel has a hard edge layer and a resistant core
