Chemical Composition of Stainless Steel Flat Products For General Purposes To BS EN 10088-2

Chemical composition of stainless steel flat products for general purposes to BS EN-10088-2
BS EN 10088-2 is the material standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes.
The current edition was published in October 2014. There have been 14 new grades added compared to the
2005 edition and the compositions of 3 grades have been changed including 2 austenitic grades, (1.4371, 1.4597),
and one duplex grade, (1.4362). LAST UPDATED 13th November 2014.

The new grades added include austenitic grades 1.4618, 1.4376, 1.4640, 1.4646, austenitic-ferritic, (duplex), grades
1.4162, 1.4662, 1.4482, 1.4062 and ferritic grades 1.4600, 1.4607, 1.4611, 1.4613, 1.4630, 1.4634.

CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF STAINLESS STEEL FLAT PRODUCTS FOR GENERAL PURPOSES TO BS EN 10088-2
Introduction
BS EN 10088-2 is the material standard for stainless steel sheet, plate and strip for general purposes. A total of
101 stainless steel grades are now listed, including 26 ferritic, 15 martensitic, 2 precipitation hardening, 46 austenitic
and 12 austenitic-ferritic (duplex) grades. The chemical compositions of these stainless steels are shown in this article.

As an alternative to scanning down the list try the ‘find’ facility on your keyboard, using the ‘Ctrl’ and ‘F’ keys together.
Type in the term you are looking for in the dialog box that then appears.

NB The data given here is not intended to replace that shown in individual standards to which reference should always be made.

BS EN 10088-2:2024 Edition
BS EN 10088-2 was originally published in 1995. The second version, BS EN 10088-2:2005, was superseded by BS EN 10088-2:2014,
which itself has now been superseded by BS EN 10088-2:2024, all the earlier versions of the standard have now been withdrawn by BSI.
The tables shown here only have the 2024 composition ranges.

There have been 7 new grades added compared with the 2014 edition and the compositions of 7 grades have been changed, i.e.
of three austenitic grades (1.4310, 1.4404, 1.4529), two ferritic grades, (1.4003, 1.4521), and two martensitic grades, (1.4028, 1.4116).

The new grades added include austenitic grades 1.4382, 1.4420, 1.4678, 1.4682, austenitic-ferritic (duplex) grade, 1.4637, ferritic grade,
1.4622, and martensitic grades, 1.4060.

Several austenitic-ferritic (duplex) grades have been moved from the special grade section to the standard grade section,
(see Table below), which reflects their increased availability and usage.

Three steels have been removed from the standard, i.e. austenitic grades, 1.4319, 1.4537, and the austenitic-ferritic (duplex) grade 1.4655.

It is important to carefully check the standard in cases of dispute.

A few entries for the permissible product analysis tolerances on values for cast analysis, shown in Table 5 of the standard, have
been slightly adjusted with some new ranges and limits, e.g. the upper limit for the higher Silicon range is now 6.0, rather than 6.00,
the upper limit for the higher range of Phosphorus is now less than or equal to 0.070, the lower limit for the higher Nitrogen range is
now less than 0.10, the upper limit for the higher range of Titanium is now less than or equal to 3.00, and the maximum permissible
negative deviation for Vanadium is -0.01.

See table below for full details of permitted deviations of product analysis
